PRIESTS AND DEACONS RETURN TO THEIR HOME PARISHES AFTER ANNUAL RETREAT

The priests and deacons of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg returned to their home parishes around the province of Manitoba following the 2019 annual clergy retreat. The retreat was held this year at the Lakeview Hotel on Hecla Island under the direction of Edmonton priest, Fr. Mihajlo Planchak. Fr. Planchak, aside from his 40 years of priestly pastoral experience, is presently serving as the Spiritual Director for Holy Spirit Seminary in Edmonton. He offered spiritual talks and homilies throughout the 4-day retreat. He explained that much of his material was based on the writings on the priesthood of a few authors, including the late Patriarch Joseph Slipyj, the saintly Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky and Pope Francis. At least two of the sessions were dedicated to Pope Francis' Letter to Priests on the 160th Anniversary of the Death of the Holy Curé of Ars, Saint John Vianney. Fr. Mihajlo also referred frequently to the little known work of the Confessor Joseph Slipyj, The Way of Renewal (1928), now available in English translation from McNally Robinson.

The clergy of Manitoba have experienced their annual collective spiritual renewal. It was a time of prayer and meditation with a mix of some rest (or at least change) and fellowship with brothers in ministry. They are surely returning to their parishes and pastoral responsibilities with renewed energy and new insights and hope. So when they exhibit new enthusiasm and ideas - you'll know why. Support them and go with it! Also, ask them about their experience! Ask them about the thoughts and ideas and inspirations that they take away from the retreat.

The annual retreat is for the good of our clergy, but it is also for the good of our parishes and our entire Archeparchy! Let's keep the momentum going!
