PASCHAL LETTER OF THE BISHOPS OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CANADA Pascha 2011 AD “Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem! For the glory of the Lord has shone upon you”. Reverend Fathers, Venerable Sisters, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ – Faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, Christ is Risen! Indeed He is risen! Dear Brothers and Sisters, With a warm and sincere heart we greet you all on the occasion of the joyful and illustrious Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord. We send out this joyful news to all – young and old, men and women, the healthy and the sick, the clergy and the laity. May this day be for each of you a new day of spiritual elation and growth. During the festal Divine Liturgy in all our churches we solemnly, and usually in many languages, proclaim the Prologue to the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1-2). This “in the beginning”, in Greek en archê, evokes the first word in the Bible, in Old Hebrew bereshith: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This verse is read in our tradition during Vespers and Liturgy of St. Basil service on Holy Saturday. So, on the one hand our liturgical texts direct our attention towards the creation of the world, and with it towards the first Adam and his fall. But on the other hand we see the Risen Christ – a new beginning, a new creation, the New Adam, who opens for us the gates of paradise. This year, as we celebrate the Pascha of our Lord, we would like to invite you to reflect on this aspect of newness, which is one of its essential characteristics. Note how during Easter Matins we sing about “a new drink”, and about “a new fruit of the vineyard”, and how in joy we call out to the New Jerusalem: “shine, shine!”, for the Lord’s glory is upon us. The prophets announced this new reality: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah” (Jeremiah 31:31) and “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26). And also “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind” (Isaiah 65:17). Christ’s teaching is marked by signs of this new reality: “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him” (Mark 1:27). “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins” (Luke 5:37-38). In the Book of Revelations we read: “And I (John) saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (21:2). And Saint Paul appropriately reminds us today: “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). Even though our Lord Jesus Christ began preaching the Good News almost two thousand years ago, it remains ever new, fresh and always youthful. The Bride of Christ, which is the Church, is renewed continuously, from generation to generation. She always receives new members, and allows her older sons and daughters to remain young as children of God. With just a tiny openness to God’s work the Lord raises the fallen, heals the sick, cleanses the defiled, so that we might dedicate ourselves to the building of the Kingdom of God with renewed vigour. And if someone tells you that there is nothing new under the sun, do not believe them, for with in our Lord’s Pascha all is renewed for those, who live according to the Spirit of God. Certainly you can sense this in celebrating the feast today! Most recently we, Your Pastors, were ourselves convinced of this. As you are aware, in the month of March during the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church a new Patriarch was elected, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shewchuk. Possibly some may be surprised that we elected such a young Head and Father for our Church. But we are convinced that the Holy Spirit guided us in this way, to remind us that the One, who sits at the right hand of the Father continuously exclaims: “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelations 21:5). We ask you to not forget our Patriarch-emeritus Lubomyr, for we know that he will be remembering us in his prayers. We remain ever grateful to him for his blessed and wise leadership, and for his noble and youthful spirit of love for our Church and people. And together with our new Patriarch Sviatoslav, let all of us be new and young in spirit. As we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord, let us recommit ourselves to working in our parishes and communities with renewed resolve and energy. And to all our brothers and sisters in Ukraine and throughout the world we wish every blessing and joy from above. The blessing of the Lord be upon you all! ПАСХАЛЬНЕ ПОСЛАННЯ ІЄРАРХІЇ УКРАЇНСЬКОЇ КАТОЛИЦЬКОЇ ЦЕРКВИ В КАНАДІ Великдень 2011 р. Б. «Світися, світися, новий Єрусалиме, слава бо Господня на тобі возсіяла.» Всесвітлішому Духовенству, Монашеству та Преподобним Сестрам, Семінаристам та Возлюбленим в Христі Вірним Української Католицької Церкви в Канаді Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес! Дорогі Браття і Сестри! Щиросердечно вітаємо усіх Вас з радісним і світлим Празником Воскресення Христового. Цю радісну новину ми сповіщаємо кожному – молодим і старшим, чоловікам і жінкам, здоровим і немічним, духовенству та мирянам. Хай для кожного буде цей день новим днем духовного піднесення й відродження. На празничній Святій Літургії по всіх наших храмах ми урочисто, і то різними мовами, виголошуємо пролог Євангелія від Йоана: «В началі було Слово, і Слово було в Бога, і Слово було Бог» (1,1-2). Це «в началі» – «на початку», по-грецьки ен архі, перекликується із першим словом Святого Письма, староєврейським берешіт, яким розпочинається Книга Буття: «В началі сотворив Бог небеса і землю» (1, 1), що, між іншим, також читається саме у Велику Суботу на Вечірні з Літургією Святого Василія Великого. Отже, з одної сторони, богослужбові тексти звертають нашу увагу на початок світу, а з тим, і на першого Адама і на його упадок. Та з другої сторони, бачимо Христа Воскреслого – новий початок, нове сотворення, Новий Адам, який відкриває нам райські двері. Цього року ми хотіли б зосередитись саме на цьому новітньому аспекті Пасхи Христової. Зауважте, як на Воскресній Утрені ми співаємо про «пиття нове», і про «новий виноградний овоч» та в радості кличемо до Нового Єрусалиму: «світися, світися», бо слава Господня засіяла. Про цю новість сповіщали пророки: «Ось дні наступають, говорить Господь, і складу Я із домом Ізраїлевим і з Юдиним домом Новий Заповіт».(Єремія 31, 31) та: «Я дам вам нове серце, і новий дух вкладу в ваше нутро. Я вийму кам’яне серце з вашого тіла й дам вам серце тілесне» (Єзекиїл 36, 26). І далі: «Бо ось Я створю нове небо та землю нову, і не згадаються речі колишні, і не прийдуть на серце!» (Ісая 65, 17). Христова наука позначається усіма знаками новости: «Що це таке? Нова наука із потугою! Навіть духам нечистим наказує Він, і вони Його слухають» (Марко 1, 27). Або: «І ніхто не вливає вина молодого в старі бурдюки, а то попрориває вино молоде бурдюки, і вино розіллється, і бурдюки пропадуть. Але треба вливати нове вино до нових бурдюків» (Лука 5, 37-38). У Книзі Одкровення читаємо: «І я, Іван, бачив місто святе, Новий Єрусалим, що сходив із неба від Бога, що був приготований, як невіста, прикрашена для чоловіка свого» (21, 2). Та Святий Павло нам дуже влучно сьогодні нагадує: «Отож, ми поховані з Ним хрищенням у смерть, щоб, як воскрес Христос із мертвих славою Отця, так щоб і ми стали ходити в обновленні життя» (до Римлян 6, 4). Незважаючи на те, що Господь наш Ісус Христос звістив нам свою Добру Новину майже дві тисячі років тому, вона і далі залишається новою, свіжою та завжди молодою. Христова Церква постійно відновлюється з покоління в покоління. Вона постійно приймає нових членів, та дає можливість своїм старшим донькам і синам залишатися дітьми Божими. Вистачає малої крихітки відкритості на Божу дію з нашого боку, щоб Господь підніс кожного упалого, зцілив кожного недужого та очистив кожного оскверненого. Це для того, щоб ми могли присвятити себе поширенню Божого Царства з відновленою силою. І коли хтось Вам скаже, що нема нічого нового на світі, Ви йому не вірте, бо з Пасхою Христовою усе відновлюється для тих, які живуть Божим Духом. Хіба самі не відчуваєте цього з нинішнім празником? Ми самі, Ваші Пастирі, недавно переконалися в цьому. Як вам відомо, у місяці березні на Синоді Владик Української Греко-Католицької Церкви обрано нового Патріярха, Блаженнішого Святослава Шевчука. Можливо, дехто дивується, що ми вибрали собі такого молодого Главу і Батька нашої Церкви. А ми переконані, що це саме Святий Дух так покерував, щоб нагадати нам, що Той, Хто сидить праворуч Отця постійно промовляє: «Ось нове все творю!» (Одкровення 21, 5). Ми просимо вас не забувати нашого Патріярха-емерита Любомира, бо ми знаємо, що він буде пам’ятати про нас у своїх молитвах. Ми залишаємось вдячні йому за його блаженне та мудре керівництво Церквою та за його шляхетний та молодий дух любові до Церкви і народу. А разом із нашим молодим Патріярхом Святославом, будьмо і ми нові й молоді духом. З празником Воскресіння Христового постановімо працювати у своїх парафіях та релігійних спільнотах з відновленою охотою та енергією. А усім нашим братам і сестрам в Україні та на поселеннях щиро бажаємо Божого благословення і радості. Благословення Господнє на Вас! New Patriarch SVIATOSLAV Holy Synod Elects Bishop Sviatoslav (Shevchuk)
The (then) Bishop Sviatoslav [Shevchuk] has been elected Patriarch at an Electoral Holy Synod in Lviv/Bruhovitchi 21-24 March 2011, in accord with the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches and the Particular Law of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC).
Patriarch Sviatoslav is 40 years old. Since April 2010, he has been the Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of the Protection of the Theotokos in Argentina.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the newly elected Head of the UGCC made his profession of faith and promise to carry out faithfully his office in the presence of the bishops of the Electoral Holy Synod.
The ceremonies of the enthronement of His Beatitude Sviatoslav as Patriarch of Kyiv-Halych took place in Kyiv (Ukraine), on Sunday, 27 March, during the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the patriarchal Sobor of the Holy Resurrection of Christ. This Hierarchical Liturgy concluded the Electoral Holy Synod.
The Electoral Synod was called as a result of the announcement of the retirement of His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar on 10 February 2011 due to his deteriorating health.
His Beatitude Lubomyr had been elected Patriarch at an Electoral Synod in Lviv, in January 2001. Vladyka Ihor [Vozniak], Archbishop of Lviv, was appointed Patriarchal Administrator of the UGCC and continued this role until the official enthronement of His Beatitude Sviatolsav.
The Electoral Synod followed a day of prayer and reflection by the membership of the Synod. Sunday, 20 March, Archbishop Ihor along with the bishops served a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral Sobor of St. George, in Lviv. After the Divine Liturgy the bishops visited the crypt at St. George’s Cathedral and prayed at the tombs of the Servant of God Metropolitan Andriy Sheptytsky, Patriarch Josyf Slipij, Patriarch Myroslav Ivan [Lubabivsky] as well as other church leaders of the UGCC. The Very Rev. Doctor Borys Gudziak, rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv led the bishops in their day of spiritual reflection.
Forty bishops of the UGCC under the leadership of Archbishop Ihor took part in the Electoral Synod. All of the ruling bishops of the UGCC from Ukraine, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, England, Canada, United States of America, Brazil, Argentina and Australia were in attendance. Five emeritus bishops of the UGCC also participated in the Synod. Including the emeritus bishops there are a total of 51 Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishops worldwide, with more than seven and a half million faithful.
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is the largest Eastern Church in communion with Rome. On 30 March 1991, Patriarch Myroslav Ivan [Lubachivsky] ended his exile in Rome and returned to Lviv. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church ended its forced clandestine existence in 1989 after a period of more than 40 years of persecution by the Soviet Authorities.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav was born in Striy, Ukraine on 5 May 1970. Between 1991-1992 he studied at the Don Bosko Centre for Philosophy and Theology in Buenos Aires, Argentina and then later at Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv 1992-1994. He was ordained a deacon for the Archeparchy of Lviv on 21 May 1994 by Bishop Philemon [Kurchaba] C.Ss.R. (of blessed memory) and a presbyter of the Archeparchy of Lviv by Patriarch Myroslav Ivan [Lubachivsky] (of blessed memory) on 26 June 1994. He completed his doctoral studies (summa cum laude) in Theological Anthropology based on the Byzantine moral and theological tradition at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome in 1999 receiving.
Between the years of 1999 and 2009 he served as prefect, vice rector and rector of Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv. In 2001 he was appointed vice-dean of the theological faculty of the Lviv Theological Academy (later the Ukrainian Catholic University). From 2002 to 2005 he was the chief of staff and personal secretary of His Beatitude Lubomyr [Husar] and the director of the Patriarchal Curia in Lviv.
On 14 January 2009, His Holiness Benedict XVI, confirmed the decision of the Synod of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishops to nominate him auxiliary bishop of the Protection of Theotokos Eparchy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, titular bishop of Castra di Galba. His Episcopal ordination took place on 7 April 2009 at St. George’s Cathedral Sobor in Lviv.
The main consecrator was Archbishop Ihor [Vozniak] along with co-consecrating Bishops Mykhajlo [Mykycej] (Buenos Aires) and the newly reposed Julian [Gbur], (Striyj). On 10 May 2010, Bishop Sviatoslav was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of the Protection of the Theotokos in Buenos Aries. He is currently the head of the Synodal Committee for Clergy.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav’s native language is Ukrainian. He is fluent in English, Italian, Polish, Russian and Spanish.
GREAT LENT COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN UKRAINE GLORY BE TO JESUS CHRIST Prot H/6/2011 To the Clergy and Faithful of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg! Dearly Beloved in Christ, Since the rebirth of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine in 1990, following the downfall of communism, we, in the free western world, have been called upon in various ways to assist financially our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Their needs have included poor health care, lack of employment, substandard housing, support for the orphans and the elderly, soup kitchens – just to name a few. The church communities have had to repair old and neglected church buildings and build new places of worship. From their traditional homes in western Ukraine (Halychyna) our Ukrainian Catholic faithful have been moving into eastern, southern and northern Ukraine, where there have been no organized Church structures for them. Since 1990 our Church has accomplished much in Ukraine. It has its own governing system in the Synod of Bishops, which strives to meet the needs of the faithful in areas such as catechetical instruction and the training of priests. But the ongoing economic and political situation in Ukraine continues to hinder the Church from achieving its self-sufficiency. To help meet the financial needs for some years now the Synod of Bishops has assessed each eparchy in and outside Ukraine an annual fee. Until now we have tried to provide that assessed fee through our general funds. However, this had become very difficult to do, especially with the most recent increase of our assessment to $16,905.00 (US). In addition His Beatitude Lubomyr created a collection called “Andrew’s Pence” to provide the head of our Church with funds to assist those areas both in Ukraine and beyond that have no organized church structure. Such areas include eastern Ukraine and Kazakstan. With this situation in mind I am asking for a collection to be taken up in the parishes of the Archeparchy throughout the province of Manitoba during the period of Great Lent. This will be an annual collection beginning with this year. Parishioners are asked to make cheques payable to their parishes, with the note “Collection for the Church in Ukraine”. Parishes are asked to provide income tax receipts to the parishioners and to send one cheque to the Archeparchy Chancery office. Funds will first be used to meet our assessed fee, while additional revenue will be given to the “Andrew’s Pence” fund. I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your generosity, especially when many within our own Archeparchy are struggling with their own financial needs. ВЕЛИКОПОСНА ЗБІРКА НА ЦЕРКВУ В УКРАЇНІ СЛАВА ІСУСУ ХРИСТУ! Prot H/6/2011 Духовенству та вірним Вінніпезької Архиєпархії Дорогі у Христі, З часу відродження Української Католицької Церкви 1990 року після падіння комунізму, нас, мешканців західного світу, неодноразово закликали до різноманітної фінансової підтримки наших братів та сестер в Україні. Серед прикладів нагальних потреб України був низький рівень медичного обслуговування, брак місць працевлаштування, невідповідні умови житла, потреба у матеріальній підтримці сиріт та людей похилих віком, їдальні для бідних і т.д. Парафіяльним громадам необхідно було відновляти старі та занедбані церкви, а також будувати нові. Хоча традиційний осередок Української Католицької Церкви був на Галичині, вірні нашої Церкви розсіялися на схід, північ та південь країни, де не було організованих Церковних структур. Від 1990 року Церква багато досягла в Україні. Вона має свою урядову систему в особі Синоду Єпископів, що намагається відповідати на потреби вірних, наприклад, у справах катехитичного служіння та підготовки священиків. Однак сучасна економічна та політична ситуація в Україні і надалі продовжує перешкоджати Церкві у досягненні її самозабезпечення. Аби допомогти забезпечити фінансові потреби Церкви, Синод Єпископів щорічно визначає суму внеску, яку мають надіслати від кожної єпархії в Україні та з-поза її меж. Дотепер ми намагалися виплачувати цю суму самотужки з загальних фондів, однак з кожним разом це ставало набагато важчим, а особливо трудним стало тепер, коли розмір очікуваного від нас внеску збільшився до $16, 905.00 (US). На додаток, Блаженнішим Любомиром була запроваджена збірка коштів, названа «Андріїв гріш». Ціль цього фонду – сприяти розвитку організованої церковної структури там, де їх ще немає як на теренах України, так і за її межами. Зокрема йдеться про Східну Україну та Казахстан. Беручи до уваги усе вище наведене, я звертаюся з проханням до усіх парафій Архиєпархії по цілій Манітобі в часі Великого Посту в провести у цьому намірі збірку грошей. Починаючи з цього року, така збірка буде проводитися на щорічній основі. Просимо парафіян виписувати чеки на ім’я парафії, з позначкою «Збірка на Церкву в Україні». Парафії, у свою чергу, просимо видавати парафіянам відповідні посвідки для декларації податків, та вислати зібрані кошти одним чеком до Архиєпархіальної канцелярії. Ці гроші будуть використані, щоб заплатити визначений для нашої Архиєпархії внесок, а надлишок буде відданий у фонд «Андріїв гріш». THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD 2010 PASTORAL LETTER OF THE BISHOPS OF CANADA To the Very Reverend Clergy, Monastics and Religious Sisters, Seminarians and Laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada: Our Saviour, the rising Sun, more brilliant than any other sun, has visited us today from on high. We once were in darkness and the shadow of error, but now we have found the truth; for the Virgin gives birth to the Lord our God in Bethlehem. [Exapostilarion for the Nativity] Christ is Born! Let us Praise Him! During the autumn of 2010 the world followed with prayerful concern, fear and fascination the plight of the 33 miners in Chile. This group of workers, trapped deep within the dark earth, initially did not know if anyone even knew that they were still alive. After 69 days hope appeared. First a camera was lowered into their world. Then they sent a message scribbled on a piece of paper up to the surface. Slowly food and water were lowered to them, together with messages from their loved ones. Finally, by means of a miniature camera, the world above was able to watch the capsule that was lowered into their entombed world below. But it was only when a human figure stepped out of the capsule and into their world and into their lives that the miners could really feel their salvation was close at hand. And even then it was not a total certainty. They would still have to endure, one by one, the return trip back to the surface, a journey, which entailed many possible hazards. Dearly Beloved in Christ! This year, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ in Bethlehem some two thousand years ago, the events surrounding the miners in Chile can help us understand the significance of the birth of our Saviour and His entry into our world and into our lives. Before the coming of Christ, humanity lived in a world of darkness with little hope for salvation. Even as they strove to overcome all the challenges of life on earth, the people of this world could understand little of life after death. Only as Almighty God began to communicate with them, as we read in the Old Testament, did hope begin to enter their lives. This hope took human form when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. When the Son of God took upon himself human nature with the flesh and blood of a man, the human race discovered salvation within their midst in a way that went far beyond the earlier expressions of hope from Old Testament times. As the first rescuer showed the way to freedom and salvation to the trapped miners by the example of his own descent, so too Jesus has shown by his example and his teachings our way to eternal salvation with his heavenly Father in eternity. But, like each of those miners, we too, one by one, must undertake our own hazardous journey to eternal salvation. In the traditional icon of the Nativity of our Lord, we see that the Child Jesus is lying in front of the dark cave of a mountain. How similar this is to the darkness the miners of Chile endured within the earth before they were freed. When the miners then returned to the surface each of them had to wear protective sunglasses to protect their eyes from the glare of the light that greeted them – a light they had lost during their stay deep within the earth. They were not unlike the three apostles who saw Christ transfigured in dazzling brightness. Indeed Christ is the light of our lives, a light that grows stronger the closer we come nearer to Him in our daily lives. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! We send you greetings on this feast of the Nativity of Christ, in the hope of the salvation He offers to all, and in recognition of the many hazards and difficulties you find on your earthly journey. We greet the elderly and the shut-ins, who due to physical limitations cannot live life to its fullest. We greet the sick and the weak, in their daily struggle to achieve good health. We greet those who for financial reasons live in doubt and uncertainty, searching for stable and secure homes. We greet the parents who strive to raise their children in a Christian manner in a world that ridicules their faith. We greet the young people who search for meaning and value to life, but are offered false hope and darkness by a selfish society. ПАСТИРСЬКЕ ПОСЛАННЯ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ КАТОЛИЦЬКИХ ЄПИСКОПІВ КАНАДИ З НАГОДИ РІЗДВА ХРИСТОВОГО 2010 Всесвітлішим і Високопреподобним отцям, Преподобним ченцям і черницям, Дорогим у Христі семінаристам та мирянам Української Католицької Церкви в Канаді: “Засвітив до нас з неба Спаситель наш: Схід із сходу. І ми, що перебували в тіні й темряві, знайшли істину, бо від Діви народився Господь.” [Світильний Різдва] Христос Рождається! Славіте Його! Восени 2010 року цілий світ із молитвою та острахом, неначе зачаровані, спостерігали за ситуацією, в яку потрапили 33 шахтарі в Чилі. Ця група робітників, що опинилися у пастці в надрах землі, на початку навіть не знали, чи хоч хтось нагорі усвідомлював, що вони усе ще живі. Надія з’явилася лише за 69 днів. Спочатку до них спустили камеру. Потім вони надіслали на поверхню землі повідомлення на клаптику паперу. Згодом їм спустили їжу та воду, разом зі звісткою від їх рідних та близьких. Врешті, за допомогою мініатюрною камери, світ вгорі спостерігав за капсулою, яку спускали в їх захований під землею світ. Та лишень коли жива людина з тієї капсули увійшла в їх підземний світ, в їх життя, гірники нарешті по-справжньому відчули, що спасіння близько. Але навіть і тоді ще не було абсолютної певності. З терпеливістю вони очікували, аби один за одним почати підніматися на поверхню землі – ще одна подорож, що переховувала у собі чимало ризику. Дорогі у Христі! Ми з Вами святкуємо народження нашого Господа Ісуса Христа у Вифлеємі близько двох тисяч років тому. Подія, що сталася з гірниками у Чилі, допомагає нам краще зрозуміти значимість народження нашого Спасителя та Його прихід у світ спасти наше життя. До приходу Христа людство жило у світі темряви, де жеврів лиш невеличкий промінь надії на спасіння. І скільки люди цього світу не намагалися поконати труднощі і виклики земного життя, вони ніяк не могли самотужки збагнути значення життя після смерті. І лишень коли Бог Вседержитель починає спілкуватися з ними, як про це читаємо у Старому Завіті, життя людей наповняється надією. Саме ця надія прибрала людський образ у народженні Христа у Вифлеємі. І коли Син Божий прийняв людську природу – тіло і кров людини – людство пізнало спасіння, яке перевершило усі сподівання та надії старозавітної доби. Так, як перший рятівник, зійшовши під землю до захоплених у пастку шахтарів, показав їм спосіб порятунку та шлях до звільнення, так само і Господь своїм прикладом та вченням вказав нам шлях до вічного спасіння з Небесним Отцем у вічності. І як кожен із тих гірників у шахті, ми також, один за одним, мусимо пройти через нашу власну, часом ризиковану, подорож до вічного спасіння. Традиційна ікона Різдва Христового зображає Дитя-Ісуса, що лежить перед входом до темної печери у скелі. Це так подібно до темряви, у якій перебували ті чілійські гірники під землею в надрах шахти, аж доки їх не врятували. А коли щахтарі повернулися на поверхню землі – кожен з них мав вбрати захисні окуляри, аби захистити очі від сяйва привітного світла – світла, яке вони втратили перебуваючи в темряві підземелля. Вони стали неначе тими трьома апостолами, які побачили сяйво переображеного Христа. Христос – істинне світло нашого життя. І чим більше ми наближуємося до Христа у щоденному житті – тим яскравішим стає це світло. Дорогі Брати і Сестри! У надії на спасіння, яке Господь дарує нам усім, та визнаючи нелегкість земного шляху, який до нього провадить, ми засилаємо Вам вітання з нагоди Різдва Христового. Вітаємо наших старших та немічних, які через фізичні недуги обмежено відчувають повноту життя. Вітаємо недужих та слабих, що щоденно борються із хворобами, аби осягнути одужання. Ми вітаємо тих, хто через фінансові труднощі переживають непевності, шукаючи стабільності та достатку для своїх домівок. Вітаємо батьків, які стараються по-християнські виховати своїх дітей у світі, що не раз глумиться з віри. Вітаємо молодь, яка шукає за правдивими вартостями життя, незважаючи на те. що егоїстичне суспільство пропагує брехливі сподівання та темряву. Вітаємо усіх, хто служить у війську і ризикує своїм життям, стоячи на варті миру. Вітаємо наших братів і сестер в Україні, які й надалі борються із труднощами, змагаючи до досягнення сильної демократичної держави. Вітаємо усіх вірних нашої Української Католицької Церкви, які намагаються жити вірою та підтримувати Церкву в часи змін та непевностей. Parish Holodomor Commemorations: The Metropolitan’s Instructions: In unity with the official commemoration in Ukraine, we are called to remember this tragic event on Saturday, the 27th of November. Saturday, according to our liturgical tradition is a day for offering prayers for the deceased. The Metropolitan invite the pastors, together with monastics and faithful to offer their prayers re the Holodomor. If this cannot be done on November 27th, consider another time from November 22 – 28, the week of commemoration called for by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Hierarchs of United States of America and Canada Ukrainians throughout the world will commemorate the 77th anniversary of the genocidal famine, the “HOLODOMOR”, which was perpetuated by Joseph Stalin and the Soviet regime against the people of Ukraine in 1932-33. We will pray together for the souls of the over seven million victims of this man-made famine. We will raise our collective voice against such oppressive measures and suffering being used in the name of any ideology. It is important that we remember the more than 7 million victims comprised of innocent men, women and children of a proud nation who simply attempted to defend itself from the forced collectivization policy of Soviet Russia. Borders were closed. Food and crops were confiscated. People who were defiant were shot. Their souls cry out to be remembered. Let us gather in our holy churches to pray for their souls. We unite ourselves with them in our collective holy prayer. St. Paul reminds us that “you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone”. (Ephesians 2:14-22) We, your hierarchs, remind you to fulfill your obligation as a member of the household of God by remembering the victims of the famine in collective prayer. We are also called to be a living voice for justice for the millions of victims of the “Holodomor”. We are called to continually bring to mind, to ourselves and to the world around us, that this famine occurred as a result of the policies of a repressive and evil regime. Much of the world deluded itself of it happening at the time. Voices for justice and democracy were silenced, largely by the media who perpetuated the oppressive regime’s denial of the existence of the man-made famine. Our living voice is needed to ensure that such acts of genocide are remembered and prevented from re-occurring. Efforts to erase or minimize the horrific impact of this man-made famine continue to this day. Our strong and assertive collective voice is needed to ensure that the sacrifice of the over 7 million victims is not forgotten and not repeated. Your hierarchs urge you to choose to be a part of the living conscience of those who have suffered. Their memory and sacrifice cannot be forgotten or minimized. The victims of the genocide in Ukraine need to be remembered and given justice and dignity by our speaking up in remembrance of them, and for other such victims of genocide throughout the world. We, the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches in the United States of America and Canada pray that this united pastoral message to our faithful will serve as a source of inspiration for Ukrainians to unite in prayerful observance and as a collective voice in remembering the more than seven million victims of the “Holodomor” genocide of 1932-33 in Ukraine. May the memory of the victims of the “Holodomor” genocide be eternal. Заклик до молитви і живого голосу за справедливість Пастирське послання
Української Католицької та
Української Православної єрархії Сполучених Штатів та Канади Українці світу будуть поминати 77-му річницю голоду-геноциду – Голодомору, влаштованого Йосифом Сталіним і Совєтським режимом проти народу України в 1932-33 роках. Ми спільно будемо молитися за душі понад семи мільйонів жертв цього штучного голоду. Ми піднімемо наш об’єднаний голос проти цих жорстокостей та мук, що застосовувалися в ім’я ідеології. Важливо, щоб ми пам’ятали більш як 7 мільйонів невинних жертв чоловіків, жінок, дітей гордої нації, які просто намагалися захиститися від насильної колективізаційної політики Совєтської Росії. Кордони були замкнені. Продукти та хліб конфісковані. Непокірні – розстріляні. Їхні душі закликають до пам’яті. Зберімося в наших святих церквах на молитву за їхні душі. Поєднаймося з ними у спільній святій молитві. Святий Павло нагадує нам, що ми «більше не чужинці і не приходні, а співгромадяни святих і домашні Божі, побудовані на підвалині апостолів і пророків, де наріжним каменем - сам Ісус Христос» (Еф. 2, 14-22). Ми, ваші єрархи, нагадуємо вам, як членам дому Божого, про здійснення вашого обов’язку - у спільній молитві згадати жертв цього голоду. Ми також покликані стати живим голосом за справедливість для мільйонів жертв Голодомору. Ми покликані постійно пам’ятати самі і нагадувати всьому світові, що цей голод виник як результат політики репресивного зловісного режиму. Більшість світу відмежувалася від того, що відбувалося в той час. Голоси за справедливість та демократію заглушувалися, головно засобами масової інформації, які підтримували репресивний режим у запереченні існування штучного голоду. Наші живі голоси потрібні для того, щоб зберегти пам’ять про такі акти геноциду і не допустити їхнього повторення. Спроби заперечити та применшити страшні наслідки цього штучного голоду продовжуються і сьогодні. Наш міцний і наполегливий колективний голос потрібний, щоб упевнитися, що жертва семи мільйонів не забута і ніколи не повториться. Ваші єрархи заохочують вас стати частиною живої совісті тих, хто страждали. Пам’ять про них і їхня жертва не мають бути забуті, чи применшені. Жертви геноциду в Україні треба згадувати, повертаючи їм справедливість та гідність пам’ятати про них та про інші подібні жертви геноциду в усьому світі. Ми єрархи Української Католицької та Української Православної Церков Сполучених Штатів та Канади молимося за те, щоб це спільне пастирське послання до наших вірних послужило джерелом натхнення для українців єднатися в молитовному поминанні та в спільному згадуванні більш як семи мільйонів жертв Голодомору-геноциду в Україні 1932-1933 років. Amen BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND IN FULL COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE OF ROME, LUBOMYR Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halych of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church To the Most Reverend Bishops, the Reverend Fathers, Venerable Monks and Nuns and the Lay-Faithful of the Particular Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church I DECLARE AND PUBLISH THE RESOLUTIONS Of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, which took place in Lviv-Brukhovychi from 2nd to the 9th of September in the year of our Lord 2010 1. The text of the appeal of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church (UGCC) to the Faithful and to all people of goodwill, is confirmed. 2. For the amelioration of the pastoral care of Migrants: A. The Pastoral-Missionary Department in collaboration with the Hierarchy of the UGCC is commissioned to prepare and present to the Permanent Synod for review - a project of directives for pastoral ministry among the Faithful of the UGCC living in a migration situation. B. The Commission for Migrant Affairs is reorganized and placed into the structure of the Pastoral-Missionary Department; C. It is recommended that all local Hierarchs appoint in their eparchies and exarchates individuals responsible for the pastoral care of migrants; D. Academic institutions, especially the Ukrainian Catholic University, are requested to organize conferences and other events in countries with the most numerous Ukrainian populations for the advancement of knowledge about the identity and mission of the UGCC in the Catholic Church; E. The Pastoral-Missionary Department, in collaboration with the academic formation institutions of the UGCC, is charged with organizing special centres for the training of missionaries and other candidates for ministering to Ukrainian émigrés. F. The Pastoral-Missionary Department and the Ukrainian Catholic University are charged to develop a concept for the creation of a Pastoral-Missionary Institute and present it to the Permanent Synod for review at their first session in 2011; G. The Society of Ukrainian Canonists is requested to develop, by the end of 2010, a rulebook of canonical procedures for the dispatching and recalling of missionaries, and that it would be made congruent with the appropriate institutions of the Catholic Church. This project should be presented for review at the first session of the Permanent Synod in 2011; H. The Pastoral-Missionary Department, in collaboration with the Hierarchs of the UGCC that serve in Central and Western Europe, is charged with organizing a European congress of Ukrainian pastors for a sharing of experience and the further development of ministry among émigrés; I. The Patriarchal Liturgical Commission is charged with preparing bilingual texts of the Liturgy of John Chrysostom and Basil the Great, as well as the Rites of the Holy Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation and Marriage for the pastoral needs in countries where the most numerous populations of the Faithful of the UGCC are found; J. The Society of Ukrainian Canonists is asked to prepare a canonical-pastoral rulebook with regard to the conferring of the holy Sacraments – especially that of Marriage – to Ukrainian émigrés, and submit it for review and approval by the Permanent Synod at its first session in 2011; K. It is recommended to the local Hierarchs of the UGCC that they establish in their eparchies and exarchates counseling centres for émigrés; L. The Pastoral-Missionary Department is charged with facilitating collaboration with international organizations which activity is directed toward battling human trafficking. 3. The Statutes of the Patriarchal Commission for Evangelization – with the corrections and amendments – are accepted for a three-year trial period. 4. Members of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC are charged to submit to the head of the Patriarchal Commission for Evangelization, The Most Reverend Taras (Senkiv), by the end of the calendar year, their observations and proposals for the project of the Concept of Evangelization for the UGCC. 5. The Patriarchal Commission for Evangelization is charged with developing and presenting at the first session of the Permanent Synod in 2011 - a project for a Strategy for Evangelization, including the necessary structures and competent individuals. 6. The Financial Report of the Patriarchal Economic Committee of the UGCC for 2009 is taken into account and approved 7. The budget for the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC for 2011 is approved. 8. The financial report for the “Andrew’s Pence” Fund for 2009 was reviewed and approved. 9. The new procedure for determining the budget of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC was approved. 10 The report of the working group for the development of canons for the Particular Law of the UGCC was reviewed and approved and continued work of the Patriarchal Canon Law Section on this document was blessed - with the goal of presenting it for approval at the 2011 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC. 11. For the continued work on the Catechism of the UGCC and its publication: A. The Theological Dicastery of the Patriarchal Curia was entrusted with studying the text and is to submit its conclusions regarding the possibility of publication to the Head of the UGCC; B. [the Catechism] will be published on behalf of the Synod of Bishops as an official publication of the UGCC; C. The Patriarchal Catechetical Commission of the UGCC, in collaboration with the working group for the compilation of the Catechism, is entrusted with the development and realization of a program for its presentation and popularization; D. The Catechism Fund of the UGCC will be involved according to its statutes and in conformity with the 2008 decree of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, to continue its activity for the next 5 years, for the realization of translations and printings of the Catechism and for the realization of programs of presentation and popularization. 12. The continued work of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission is blessed with regard to the matter of applying the practice of the Catechumenate. 13. The establishment of a Patriarchal Commission is blessed for the preservation of cultural and artistic achievements of the UGCC. 14. The Postulation Centre of the UGCC is transferred from the Archeparchy of Lviv to the Patriarchal Curia as a dicastery. 15. The report of the work of the Patriarchal Liturgical Commission is accepted. 16. The Patriarchal Liturgical Commission is entrusted with developing a project of directives for the translation of liturgical texts into Ukrainian and other languages and is to be submitted for review at the first session of the Permanent Synod in 2011. 17. The Patriarchal Liturgical Commission is entrusted with gathering information in the eparchies and exarchates regarding the three most important questions on liturgical life in these territories and submitting the results for review at the first session of the Permanent Synod in 2011. 18. The Patriarchal Commission for Training in Seminaries is charged with developing directives for the pastoral care of vocations. 19. It is recommend to the Ukrainian Catholic University to establish a Chair for Pastoral Theology. 20. A blessing is given for the continued activity of the Church in the area of the maritime Apostolate, which is encouraged to continue seeking possibilities for inter-denominational collaboration in this ministry. 21. The Synodal Committee on Migrants, Refugees and Seafarers is reorganized into the following two: ‘The Committee for Emigrants and Refugees’ and ‘The Committee for Civilian Seafarers’. 22. The following Synodal committee personnel have been approved: The Committee for Civilian Seafarers: - The Most reverend Bishop Basil (Ivasiuk), Committee Chair; - The Most Reverend Bishop Paul (Chomnycky), Committee member The Committee for Emigrants and Refugees: - The Most Reverend Dionisij (Liachowych), Committee Chair; The Committee for Beatification and Canonization: - the Most Reverend Michael (Hrynchyshyn); Committee Chair; - the Most Reverend Ihor (Vozniak), Committee Member; - the Most Reverend Hlib (Lonchyna), Committee Member; - the Most Reverend Richard (Seminak), Committee Member. The Committee for Monasticism: - the Most Reverend Benedict (Aleksichuk), Committee Chair; - the Most Reverend Myron (Mazur), Committee Member. 23. The development of social communication is recognized as one of the most important means for the building up of the Church / the eparchy / the exarchate. 24. It is recommended that all presiding hierarchs of the UGCC appoint a qualified individual to be responsible for the press-service of their eparchies or exarchates, where this has not already been done. 25. For the appropriate preparation for the 5th session of the Patriarchal Council of 2011, which is dedicated to the theme of Consecrated Life: A. The extant emblem of the Patriarchal Councils is to be maintained without change; B. The program of the 2011 Council that was presented by the Council Secretariat is accepted; C. The praying of the Prayer for vocations to the consecrated life, which was proposed by the Council Secretariat, is recommended; D. The proposed program of preparation for the Council within eparchies and exarchates of the UGCC is approved. 26. The Blessing is given for the creation of a permanent acting Secretariat of the Patriarchal Council of the UGCC. 27. The Statutes of the 5th Session of the Patriarchal Council of the UGCC are accepted. 28. The year 2011 will be dedicated with a theme of consecrated life. 29. The Most Reverend Bishops Bryan (Bayda) and Dionisij (Liachowych), in collaboration with the UGCC Commission on Youth, are charged with developing a program of shared events for the youth of the UGCC during the 2011 World Youth Day to take place in Madrid and with promoting this program in all the eparchies and exarchates of the UGCC. 30. The practice of celebrating an annual Youth Day in our Church is to be cultivated with an emphasis of the personal participation of bishops in the program. 31. The proposed programme for the 5th Session of the Patriarchal Council and Synod of Bishops in 2011 is accepted. Р-10/548 А. доручити Пасторально-Місійному Відділу у співпраці з Ієрархами УГКЦ опрацювати та представити на розгляд Постійного Синоду проект напрямних душпастирського служіння для вірних УГКЦ, які перебувають в еміграції; Б. реорганізувати Комісію у справах мігрантів, ввівши її до складу Пасторально-місійного відділу; В. рекомендувати місцевим ієрархам призначити у своїх єпархіях та екзархатах відповідальних за душпастирство мігрантів; Г. рекомендувати науковим інституціям, зокрема Українському католицькому університету, організовувати конференції та інші заходи у країнах найбільшого поселення українців для поширення знань про ідентичність та місію УГКЦ в Католицькій Церкві; Д. доручити Пасторально-місійному відділу у співпраці з науково-формаційними структурами УГКЦ організувати спеціалізовані центри вишколу місіонерів та кандидатів для служіння українським емігрантам; Е. доручити Пасторально-місійному відділу та Українському католицькому університету опрацювати концепцію створення Пасторально-місійного інституту та представити її на розгляд першої сесії Постійного Синоду 2011 року; Ж. просити Товариство українських каноністів до кінця 2010 року опрацювати Правильник канонічної процедури посилання та відкликання місіонерів і погодження його з відповідними церковними інституціями Католицької Церкви та представити його на розгляд і затвердження першої сесії Постійного Синоду 2011 року; З. доручити Пасторально-місійному відділу у співпраці з ієрархами УГКЦ, які діють у Центральній та Західній Європі, організувати Європейський конгрес українських душпастирів для обміну досвідом і поширення служіння серед емігрантів; И. доручити Патріаршій літургійній комісії підготувати двомовні тексти Літургій Івана Золотоустого і Василія Великого, а також Чину святих таїнств Хрещення, Миропомазання та Подружжя для душпастирських потреб у країнах найбільш чисельного перебування вірних УГКЦ; К. просити Товариство українських каноністів опрацювати канонічно-пасторальний Правильник щодо уділення святих таїнств, зокрема таїнства Подружжя українським мігрантам, і подати на розгляд і затвердження першої сесії Постійного Синоду 2011 року. Л. рекомендувати правлячим архиєреям УГКЦ утворити у своїх єпархіях та екзархатах консультативні центри (порадні) для мігрантів; М. доручити Пасторально-місійному відділу налагодити співпрацю з міжнародними організаціями, діяльність яких скерована на боротьбу з торгівлею людьми.
Аркуш 3 із 5-х Вих. Р-10/548 3. Прийняти на трирічний випробувальний термін Статут Патріаршої комісії у справах євангелізації з внесеними поправками та доповненнями. 4. Доручити членам Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ до кінця поточного календарного року подати голові Патріаршої комісії у справах євангелізації Пресвященному Владиці Тарасові (Сеньківу) зауваження та пропозиції до проекту Концепції євангелізації в УГКЦ. 5. Доручити Патріаршій комісії у справах євангелізації до першої сесії Постійного Синоду 2011 року опрацювати і представити проект Стратегії євангелізації, залучивши до цього відповідні структури та компетентних осіб. 6. Взяти до відома і затвердити фінансовий звіт Патріаршого економату УГКЦ за 2009 рік. 7. Затвердити бюджет Патріаршої курії УГКЦ на 2011 рік. 8. Взяти до відома і затвердити фінансовий звіт фонду «Андріїв гріш» за 2009 рік. 9. Затвердити нову процедуру опрацювання бюджету Патріаршої курії УГКЦ. 10. Взяти до відома і затвердити звіт Робочої групи щодо опрацювання канонів Партикулярного права УГКЦ та поблагословити дальшу роботу Патріаршого канонічного відділу над цим документом з метою подання його на затвердження Синодові Єпископів УГКЦ 2011 року. 11. Для доопрацювання Катехизму УГКЦ і його видання: А. доручити Богословському відділові Патріаршої курії прорецензувати його текст та подати свій висновок Главі УГКЦ щодо можливості його публікації; Б. видавати його від імені Синоду Єпископів як офіційне видання УГКЦ; В. доручити Патріаршій катехитичній комісії УГКЦ у співпраці з Робочою групою з написання Катехизму розробити та здійснити програму його презентації та популяризації; Г. задіяти Фонд катехизму УГКЦ згідно з його статутом та відповідно до постанови Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2008 року Божого, продовжуючи термін його дії на наступних 5 років, для здійснення перекладів та друку Катехизму, а також реалізації програми його презентації та популяризації. 12. Благословити дальшу роботу Патріаршої катехитичної комісії щодо питання застосування практики катехуменату. 13. Поблагословити створення Патріаршої комісії збереження культурних і мистецьких надбань УГКЦ. 14. Передати під опіку Архиєпископа Львівського Постуляційний центр УГКЦ у Львові, як складову частину Патріаршої курії. 15. Взяти до відома звіт про роботу Патріаршої літургійної комісії.

Доручити Патріаршій літургійній комісії опрацювати проект Інструкції щодо перекладу літургійних текстів на українську та інші мови і подати його на розгляд першої сесії Постійного Синоду 2011 року. 17. Доручити Патріаршій Літургійній комісії зібрати у єпархіях і екзархатах інформацію про три найбільш важливих питання літургійного життя на їхніх територіях та подати на розгляд першої сесії Постійного синоду 2011 року. 18. Доручити Патріаршій комісії виховання у семінаріях опрацювати напрямні душпастирства покликань. 19. Рекомендувати Українському католицькому університетові створити кафедру пастирського богослов’я. 20. Благословити дальшу діяльність Церкви у сфері морського апостоляту та продовжувати використовувати можливості міжконфесійної співпраці у цій ділянці. 21. Реорганізувати Синодальний комітет мігрантів, біженців та моряків цивільного флоту у такі два: Комітет емігрантів та біженців і Комітет моряків цивільного флоту. 22. Затвердити такий склад синодальних комітетів: - Комітет моряків цивільного флоту: Преосвященний Владика Василь (Івасюк), голова Комітету; Преосвященний Владика Павло (Хомницький), член Комітету; - Комітет емігрантів і біженців: Преосвященний Владика Діонісій (Ляхович), голова Комітету; - Комітет беатифікацій та канонізацій: Преосвященний Владика Михаїл (Гринчишин), голова Комітету; Високопреосвященний Владика Ігор (Возьняк), член Комітету; Преосвященний Владика Гліб (Лончина), член Комітету; Преосвященний Владика Ричард (Семінак), член Комітету; - Комітет з питань монашества: Преосвященний Владика Венедикт (Алексійчук), голова Комітету; Преосвященний Владика Мирон (Мазур), член Комітету. 23. Визнати, що розвиток суспільних комунікацій є одним із важливих засобів розбудови Церкви/єпархії/екзархату. 24. Рекомендувати правлячим архиєреям УГКЦ призначити, де цього ще не зроблено, кваліфіковану особу, відповідальну за прес-службу їхніх єпархій та екзархатів. 25. Для належної підготовки V сесії Патріаршого Собору’2011, присвяченої питанням богопосвяченого життя: А. залишити без змін дотеперішню емблему Патріарших Соборів; Аркуш 5 із 5-х Вих. Р-10/548 Б. прийняти Програму Собору’2011, представлену Секретаріатом Собору; В. рекомендувати відмовляти Молитву за покликання до богопосвяченого життя, запропоновану Секретаріатом Собору; Г. прийняти представлену програму підготовки до Собору в єпархіях та екзархатах УГКЦ. 26. Благословити створення постійно діючого Секретаріату Патріаршого Собору УГКЦ. 27. Прийняти Статут V сесії Патріаршого Собору УГКЦ. 28. Присвятити наступний 2011 рік темі богопосвяченого життя. 29. Доручити Преосвященним Владикам Браєну (Байді) і Діонісієві (Ляховичу) у співпраці з Комісією УГКЦ у справах молоді до 1 січня 2011 року опрацювати програму спільних заходів для молоді УГКЦ під час Всесвітнього дня молоді 2011 року Божого, який відбудеться у Мадриді, та розповсюдити її в усіх єпархіях та екзархатах УГКЦ. 30. Розвивати практику щорічного відзначення Дня молоді у нашій Церкві, наголошуючи на особистій участі єпископів у його проведенні. 31. Прийняти запропонований розпорядок V cесії Патріаршого Собору та Синоду Єпископів 2011 року.

The Resurrection of the Lord Bishops of Canada Pastoral Letter: To the Very Reverend Clergy, Monastics and Religious Sisters, Seminarians and Laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! "Let us purify our senses that we may see the risen Christ in the glory of his resurrection and clearly hear Him greeting us: Rejoice! As we sing the hymn of victory." (Paschal Matins). The stychyra of Paschal Matins echoes the episode of St. Luke's Gospel, when the disciples, on the way to Emmaus, met the Risen Lord but did not recognize Him. "Now behold, two of them were travelling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they were talking and discussing Jesus Himself drew near and went to them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, What are you discussing with each other while you walk along and are sad?" (Lk. 24,13-16). Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! We who are making our Christian journey - pilgrimage at the beginning of this twenty- first century, are overcome by sadness and worry, as were the disciples on the road to Emmaus. These moments of sadness and discouragement are changed by the Risen Christ into spiritual joy and hope, when we receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. Negative feelings, thoughts, conversations and fears that we encounter on the path of our Christian pilgrimage are transformed through faith, prayer, and repentance during the Great Lent into a renewed loving trust in Our Lord. It is then, having received Holy Communion, that we feel how our heart burns within us. (Lk. 24, 32). "Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes where opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight." (Lk. 24, 30-31). The great joy that we Christians draw from the feast of the Resurrection is explained by the fact that we do not focus our attention on ourselves, and that we are not consumed by selfishness, but that our attention is centered on Christ, who is present among us through the mystery of faith and in the Holy Eucharist. The Risen Christ is present in the Eucharist and He opens our eyes of faith towards others. Our Paschal faith is a Eucharistic faith through which we proclaim our Lord's death on the cross and his glorious Resurrection. Each Christian lives this Eucharistic faith by every thought, constantly turning their attention to Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12,2). The Paschal mystery invites us to come to Christ. The Church invites all the faithful to receive Our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Communion, especially at this holy paschal time. The Church asks us to walk along the path which Christ, our Light has shown us. The Church invites us to "purify our senses that we may see the risen Christ in the glory of His resurrection" (Paschal Matins). The prayer of the Divine Liturgy invites us to sing with joy the praises of Christ whom we have received in the Eucharist: "We have seen the true light. We have received the heavenly Spirit. We have found the true faith. We worship the undivided Trinity for having saved us." ( Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom). Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! We are surrounded by a secularized society, some even speak of a post-Christian era. The glorious Feast of the Resurrection reminds us of our calling as Christians, who have "put on" the Risen Christ in Holy Baptism, to be Jesus for others. Strengthened and renewed by the Eucharist, we are invited to witness our faith. We are called to live our faith through simple everyday circumstances in our family life, where we work, where we spend our time in leisure, where we are involved with different cultural, social and church organizations. It is through regular every day interaction and contact with others, that we can become Jesus for many, who fail to see Him. Every day is a new opportunity given to us by God to evangelize through example. The Paschal Mystery - Christ's Resurrection - renews our spiritual stamina so that we may fulfill our Christian vocation with joy and hope. ПАСТИРСЬКЕ ПОСЛАННЯ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ КАТОЛИЦЬКИХ ІЄРАРХІВ КАНАДИ З НАГОДИ ВОСКРЕСІННЯ ГОСПОДНЬОГО 2010 РОКУ
Всечеснішому Духовенству, Моншеству, Преподобним Сестрам, Семінаристам та Вірним Української Католицької Церкви в Канаді: Дорогі Браття і Сестри у Христі, Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес! ”Очистьмо почування, і побачимо Христа, осяяного неприступним світлом воскресіння, щоб ясно почути, як він мовить; Радійте всі, що пісню перемоги співаєте.” (Воскресна Утреня). Ця стихира Пасхальної Утрені є відлунням епізоду із євангелії від Луки, де учні йдучи дорогою з Єрусалиму до Емаусу зустрічають воскреслого Господа та не пізнають його зразу. Пригадаймо собі цю євангельську подію. ”Аж ось того самого дня двоє з них ішли в село, що звалось Емаус, шістдесят стадій від Єрусалиму, і розмовляли між собою про те, що сталось. Як вони розмовляли і сперичалися між собою, Ісус наблизився й ішов разом з ними, але очі їм заступило і вони його не пізнали. Він їх спитав: Що то за розмова, ви ідучи, ведете між собою, повні смутку?” (Лк. 24,13-16). Дорогі в Христі! Так і ми на початку двадцять першого століття, ступаючи дорогою християнського паломництва, також не один раз відчуваємо смуток і журбу учнів, які йшли поруч Ісуса до Емаусу. Та ці хвилини смутку і зневіри Воскреслий Христос, який дарує себе у Пресвятій Євхаристії, перетворює ці негативні моменти, думки, розмови і хвилювання у радість і надію. Приймаючи євхаристійного Господа переживши з вірою, молитвою і поканням Великий Піст, ми оновлені відчуваємо як ”палає наше серце в грудях.” (Лука 24,32). ”І як Ісус був за столом з ними, взяв хліб, благословив і розломавши його, дав їм. Тоді відкрилися в них очі і вони його пізнали.” (Лука 24,30). Велику радість християн під час празника Христового Воскресення можна пояснити тільки тим, що ми зосереджуємо усе своє життя не виключно на собі у себелюбстві, але довкола Христа, який серед нас, який є завжди присутній з нами у містерії віри, у Пресвятій Євхаристії. Євхаристійна присутність воскреслого Господа відкриває наше серце до ближніх. Наша Великодня Віра є Євхаристійною Вірою, якою ми проголошуємо Господню смерть та його світле Воскресення. Християнин живе у цій Євхаристійній Вірі кожною своєю думкою, постійно звертаючи свій зір у сторону Христа, засновника і завершителя нашої віри (Євр.12,2). Пасхальна містерія запрошує нас прийти до Христа. Церква закликає, щоб її члени приймали Євхаристійного Христа у Святому Причастю, особливо під час пасхального часу. Церква просить нас, щоб ми йшли у Світлі Христа. Вона закликає нас ”очистити наші почуття і побачимо Христа, неприступним світлом воскресення сяючого.” (Воскресна Утреня). Молитва Божественної Літургії закликає нас співати радісну пісню після того, як ми прийняли Євхаристійного Христа: ”ми виділи світло істинне, ми прийняли Духа Небесного, ми знайшли віру істину, нероздільній Тройці поклоняємося, вона бо спасла нас.” (Божесвенна Літургія Св. Івана Золотоустого). Дорогі в Христі! Ми живемо у складних часах, дехто називає це пост християнською ерою. Світлий празник Господної Пасхи пригадує нам, наше завдання як християн, які зодягнулися в Св. Тайні Хрещення у воскреслого Христа, бути Ісусом для наших ближніх. Скріплені і відновлені Євхаристійним Господом, ми є покликані бути його свідками. Серед щоденних обставин життя у родині, при праці, у суспільних і громадських колах ми маємо нагоду бути Ісусом для тих, ”яких очі є заступлені.” (Лк. 24,16). Щодня є нагода через звичайні зустрічі й контакти з другими, нашим прикладом життя євангелізувати. Празник Пасхи – воскресення Христового оновляє наші духовні сили радістю і надією це чинити. The Year of Vocations to the Consecrated Life: Pastoral Letter to the Faithful of the Ukrainian Сatholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg On the Year of Prayer for Religious Vocations Glory be to Jesus Christ! Prot H/17/2010 Dearly Beloved in Christ, The recent Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops, which took place in Ukraine in December 2009, continued with its ongoing reflections on the Christian call to holiness. The Synod has designated the year 2010 to the members of all religious communities in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, (such as Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, Basilians, Redemptorists), calling on the faithful to support them in their religious vocation, as well as praying and encouraging new candidates to dedicate themselves to religious life. As head of the Synod of Bishops, Patriarch Lubomyr has issued a letter proclaiming the year 2010 as the year of prayer for Religious Vocations. He asks that in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy the celebrants add the following petition into the Litany following the proclamation of the Holy Gospel [often called the Triple Ektenia]. We also pray for the communities of consecrated religious life: the monks, religious orders, congregations, secular institutes and for their holy vocations: Lord, hear us and have mercy. I encourage all the faithful of the Archeparchy, including clergy, religious and laity, to consider what other actions can be done both in your parishes, organizations and families, to pray and show support for the members of our religious communities of nuns, priests and brothers, which have always been an integral part of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Пастирський Лист до Вірних Української Католицької Вінніпезької Архиєпархії про молитву за покликання до богопосвяченого життя Слава Ісусу Христу! Prot H/17/2010/Uk Дорогі у Христі, Синод Єпископів Української Католицької Церкви, що відбувся у грудні 2009 року в Україні, продовжив свої роздуми над християнським покликанням до святості. У 2010 році Синод особливо наголошує на житті членів усіх богопосвячених спільнот Української Католицької Церкви (як Сестри Служебниці Непорочної Діви Марії, Василіяни, Редемптористи), та закликає вірних підтримати їх у монашому покликанні, а також молитися та заохочувати, аби нові кандидати обирали шлях богопосвяченого життя. Голова Синоду Єпископів Патріарх Любомир, видав листа, проголосивши 2010 рік роком молитви за покликання до богопосвяченого життя. Він закликає, аби під час Божественної Літургії священнослужителі додавали до ектенії, що слідує після проголошення Святого Євангелія (відомої як Потрійна Ектенія) наступне прохання: Ще молимося за спільноти богопосвяченого життя: монастирі, Чини, Згромадження, світські інститути та за їх святе покликання, Господи, вислухай і помилуй. Заохочуємо усіх вірних Архиєпархії, включно з духовенством, монашеством та мирянами, роздумати також про інші заходи щодо цієї теми у ваших парафіях, організаціях та родинах, а також молитися та виявляти підтримку членам наших монаших спільнот сестер, отців та братів, які завжди були і залишаються невід’ємною частиною Української Католицької Церкви.
